42 Lines, Inc. and its affiliates and subsidiaries (collectively, “42 Lines,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) are committed to protecting your privacy. We have prepared this Privacy Policy to describe our practices regarding the information processed by our products and any other 42 Lines products that link to this Privacy Policy (collectively, “Products”). This Privacy Policy is generally applicable to all of 42 Line’s products unless otherwise specified.
Data You Provide To Us
When using our Products, we obviously have to collect information from you, such as first and last name, email, and login ID. We also may retain information on your behalf, such as files, messages, discussion posts and comments that you store using your account. We don’t do this for our own use, we do this to serve our clients and their goals and we will never use this information for any other reason.
If you provide us feedback or contact us via email outside of the use of our Products, we will collect your name and email address, as well as any other content included in the email. We also collect other types of personal information and demographic information that you provide to us voluntarily.
Data Ownership
We make no claim of ownership of any of the data you provide us through the use of our Products. Ownership is always deferred to the client and their data ownership policies.
Data Collected Via Technology
Our servers (which are hosted by a third party service provider AWS) collect information from you, including browser type, operating system, Internet Protocol (IP) address (a number that is automatically assigned to your computer when you use the Internet, which may vary from session to session), domain name, and/or a date/time stamp for your visit. We also use cookies and web beacons (as described below) and navigational data like Uniform Resource Locators (URL) to gather information regarding the date and time of your visit and the information for which you acted on and which you viewed. Like most Internet services, we automatically gather this data and store it in log files each time you visit our Site, use our Products, or access your account on our network. We do all of this not for marketing or sales purposes, but only to support our clients and their need for information on their users as well. We will use this to help debug any problems that arise as well.
Cookies
These are small pieces of information that a website sends to your device while you are viewing a website. We may use both session cookies (which expire once you close your web browser) and persistent cookies (which stay on your device until you delete them) to provide you with a more personal and interactive experience in our Products. In addition to the cookies that our Products use, several of the AWS services our Products rely on may themselves use their own set of cookies. Finally, cookies may be added from other web services as part of the content created within a discussion. For example, if a user accesses a discussion containing an embedded YouTube video, cookies for youtube.com would be added.
Use Of Your Data
In general, personal information you submit to us is used either to respond to requests that you make, or to aid us in serving you better. 42 Lines uses your personal information in the following ways: to create and maintain your account; to identify you as a user in our system; to operate, maintain, and improve our Site and Products; to personalize and improve your experience; to send you administrative email; to respond to your comments or inquiries; to protect, investigate, and deter against fraudulent, unauthorized, or illegal activity; and to make telephone calls to you, from time to time, as a part of secondary fraud protection or to solicit your feedback with your permission.
We don’t use your data in any way that benefits our company other than benefiting us by allowing us to serve our clients better.
Disclosure Of Your Personal Information
We will share your personal information with third parties only in the ways that are described in this privacy policy or with your consent. We will never for share it for profit or for our own means, only in ways described to make the service work better for you,
Affiliates
Although we currently do not have a parent company, any subsidiaries, joint ventures, or other companies under a common control (collectively, “Affiliates”), we may in the future. We may share some or all of your information with these Affiliates, in which case we will require our Affiliates to honor this Privacy Policy.
Third Parties
We do not share or sell any personal information with third parties for the purpose of advertising nor allow advertising of any kind to exist within our Products. Personal information may be shared through integrations our product has with select third parties. Such integrations are only enabled at the discretion of the client and the personal information shared are subject to the privacy policies of those third parties. An example of this may be a client asking us to share information with a plagiarism detection system via our direct integration with them.
Other Disclosures
42 Lines may disclose information about you if it believes such disclosure is necessary to (a) comply with laws or to respond to lawful requests and legal process; or (b) protect or defend the rights, safety, or property of 42 Lines, users of the Products, or any person including to enforce our agreements, policies, and terms of use or (c) in an emergency to protect the personal safety of any person.
We may also share information about you in connection with or during negotiation of any merger, financing, acquisition, bankruptcy, dissolution, transaction or proceeding involving sale, transfer, divestiture or disclosure of all or a portion of our business or assets to another company. In the event that information is shared in this manner, notice will be posted on our Site.
We may also use de-identified and/or aggregated data for our own use. We do not use the information collected through the Products for advertising purposes. An example of this might be us running analytics for improvement of our student engagement strategies in our product.
Changes To Your Personal Information
You may change some of your personal information in your account by editing your profile within the Product. Our clients may also request changes or deletions by emailing us at the email address set forth below. We will respond to your request, when permitted by law, within 30 days. For your protection, we may take steps to verify identity before responding to your request.
Data Retention Policy
If a client chooses to end their contract with us, all of their data will be removed within 60 days of the contract end date. If a client requires a longer retention period, we can work out arrangements to do so.
Security Of Your Personal Information
42 Lines takes reasonable steps to help protect your personal information in an effort to prevent loss, misuse, unauthorized access, use, disclosure, alteration, or destruction including but not limited to encryption of all data during transfer, encryption of data when stored at rest, and scrubbing of personal information from data copies. Despite these measures, you should know that 42 Lines cannot fully eliminate security risks associated with personal information. No method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. Therefore, we cannot guarantee its absolute security. Our Products fully support and utilize the latest LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3 specifications. As such, our Products do not store users’ passwords but instead rely on the client’s LMS for user authentication and authorization. All web connections with our Products are secured via TLS 1.2.
For individuals in California, the European Economic Area, and some other jurisdictions outside the United States, we defer to the university’s decisions regarding data access, privacy, and security requests. We will process any request, including right-to-forget, submitted through the university. Such individual requests also will not affect our ability to continue processing data in lawful ways.
